The Paris Apartment

The Paris Apartment

By Lucy Foley

Okay, okay, I know this is the second book of hers that I have done in a rather short period of time, but I am doing the books as I read them, for the most part, and this book was a new release, and I couldn’t help myself.  And once again Ms. Foley did not disappoint.

One thing that can happen with style, one we see more often in television, but can appear in novels and film, is beating a dead horse.  You find a good formula that shocks and awes and is something new and works well but use it too much and it loses the magic.  It is also a bit of a shock itself when you go in to read something expecting a certain format or style, only to discover things have been mixed up a bit.  That is exactly what Lucy Foley has done with this new novel.  That does not mean it was not a page turner, because believe me, there were a few nights where I stayed up long past my bedtime sucked into the craziness, having that strong desire to discover all these peoples’ juicy secrets.

Now, why should you care?  Much like her other novels, Lucy Foley really hammers in on the fact that we really do not know anyone, even our own family, but this time around it is less about how well we know one another, so much as knowing our own self and being true to that self and what we are willing to do to protect those we care dearly about.  Told through multiple perspectives, you step inside the minds of the players of the story, each giving you small clues along the way into what life is like in this swanky Paris apartment.  There is intrigue, murder, mystery, romance, and all those things we love to gobble up. Clues are carefully woven through the prose; it is a mystery with many twists and turns, and an ending that does not disappoint.
